By Alexei Oreskovic SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc said it has begun testing its self-driving cars on city streets, a crucial new phase in its quest to eventually make the technology a standard feature in automobiles. After several years of testing self-driving cars on freeways, where driving conditions are more predictable, Google in the past year shifted its focus to city street driving, the company said in a post on its official blog on Monday. Google said it has driven thousands of miles on the streets of Mountain View, California, a small suburban community where the company maintains its headquarters roughly 35 miles South of San Francisco. Google's driverless cars rely on video cameras, radar sensors, lasers and a database of information collected from manually driven cars to help navigation, according to the company.

I mean, how did we make something like that? It's atrocious! It's an embarrassment to Atari, Mr. Steven Spielberg, and all of your families! You should be ashamed! I'm sorry about that. • 46/50   Ancient flying reptile from China fills evolutionary gap
    SCIENCE TOPIC NEWS

The newly identified Jurassic period creature, a species named Kryptodrakon progenitor that was unearthed in the Gobi desert in northwestern China, was modest in size, with a wingspan of perhaps 4-1/2 feet (1.3 meters). But later members of its branch of the flying reptiles known as pterosaurs were truly colossal, including Quetzalcoatlus, whose wingspan of about 35 feet was roughly the same as that of an F-16 fighter. Roughly 220 million years ago, pterosaurs became the first flying vertebrates to appear on Earth, with birds - first appearing about 150 million years ago - and bats - appearing about 50 million years ago - coming much later. Pterosaurs arose during the Triassic period not long after their cousins, the dinosaurs, also made their debut.

  • 47/50   NASA tries space kits to engage kids in science and space
    SCIENCE TOPIC NEWS

By Sarah McBride NEW YORK (Reuters) - Making mini satellite dishes that collect signals or building remote-controlled mini Rovers such as the kind NASA has used on Mars are the types of activities that could interest kids in science, but their complexity can derail all but the most enthusiastic hobbyist. Now, NASA, the U.S. space agency, hopes it has found a workaround through new space kits and a collaboration with a New York-based startup called LittleBits. NASA, through its Aura mission to study the Earth’s ozone layer and climate, is working with LittleBits to develop activities around a new $189 space kit, announced on Thursday. Using electronic modules such as motors and dimmers that snap together, the creations will perform functions that normally might require hours of tedious tinkering or piles of electronics components.

    SCIENCE TOPIC NEWS

A laboratory in Switzerland has created the smallest magazine cover in the world, using a tiny chisel to create an image so minute that 2,000 of them could fit on a grain of salt. Scientists carved the 11x14-micrometre image of two pandas that appeared on last month's cover of the National Geographic Kids magazine onto a polymer using technology similar to 3D printing. "My idea was to do something similar to chiselling a rock, but just to do it on a nano-scale," said Urs Duerig, a scientist at IBM in Switzerland and one of the inventors of the machine. "The application range is quite broad," said Felix Holzner, chief executive of SwissLitho, a startup to which the IBM technology has been licensed.

    SCIENCE TOPIC NEWS

By Ben Hirschler LONDON (Reuters) - Pfizer's plan to snap up its smaller rival AstraZeneca has stoked concerns about Britain's ability to remain a leader in life sciences, even as the U.S. drugmaker insists that it highly values UK research. The pharmaceutical industry represents a rare manufacturing success story for Britain and its two flagship drugmakers - AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline - provide thousands of highly skilled, well-paid jobs. AstraZeneca alone employs some 7,000 staff in Britain, even after recent hefty job cuts, and it exports almost 7 billion pounds of drugs each year, representing around 2.3 percent of all British exports of goods. “AstraZeneca and GSK are the two pillars of the UK's thriving and economically important life sciences sector, supporting biotech and academia across the science base," said Sarah Main, director of the Campaign for Science & Engineering.
