  • 1/14   A fresh Start: Microsoft's Windows 10 wins plaudits
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

Microsoft Corp's launch of its first new operating system in almost three years, designed to work across laptops, desktop and smartphones, won mostly positive reviews for its user-friendly and feature-packed interface. The launch was seen critical for the company, particularly after the poor response to Windows 8, an ambitious redesign that confused many users by ditching the start button menu and introducing a new layout. The new OS, launched on Wednesday, will be available as a free upgrade for users of Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1.

  • 4/14   CGI exiting low-margin markets, eyes M&A in cyber security
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

By Alastair Sharp TORONTO (Reuters) - CGI Group Inc, the information systems and management consultancy, said on Wednesday it would target acquisitions in cyber security while exiting some markets entirely, as it reported third-quarter profit and revenue that missed estimates. The company's chief executive officer said it has compiled a short list of 85 potential acquisition targets that would help it grow by delving deeper into industries, three years after going wide with its Logica acquisition. CEO Michael Roach told investors on a conference call that the company is working its way through a list compiled from almost a thousand interviews with top managers at its customers "as part of our buy strategy." Scores of acquisitions have fueled CGI's growth over four decades.

  • 5/14   Alibaba cloud unit sets sights on Amazon in $1 billion global push
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

China's Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said on Wednesday it would invest $1 billion into its Aliyun cloud computing arm to challenge Amazon.com Inc's lucrative Web Services division, opening a global front in the battle between the two e-commerce giants. With the global cloud computing market estimated by analysts to be worth about $20 billion, Alibaba said in a statement the investment would go toward setting up new Aliyun data centers in the Middle East, Singapore, Japan and Europe. Although Alibaba and Amazon have so far avoided competing directly in their core business of e-commerce outside China, Aliyun's international expansion takes aim squarely at Amazon Web Services (AWS), an increasingly central and profitable division of the Seattle-based company.

  • 11/14   You don't have to love cars, but you can't make them go away
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

Electrification of the auto industry isn't coming as quickly as anyone would like (except for the petroleum industry, I suppose), but it's coming — the writing is on the wall. The technology now exists to make electric cars go several hundred miles on a charge and to make those charges faster and less annoying. Many major automakers have either hinted at plans for a high-range EV in the near future or have shown one.
