Facebook , Twitter , Google's YouTube and Microsoft on Tuesday agreed to an EU code of conduct to tackle online hate speech within 24 hours in Europe. EU governments have been trying in recent months to get social platforms to crack down on rising online racism following the refugee crisis and terror attacks, with some even threatening action against the companies. As part of the pledge agreed with the European Commission, the web giants will review the majority of valid requests for removal of illegal hate speech in less than 24 hours and remove or disable access to the content if necessary.

  • 4/26   U.S. court says no warrant needed for cellphone location data

By Dustin Volz WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Police do not need a warrant to obtain a person's cellphone location data held by wireless carriers, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Tuesday, dealing a setback to privacy advocates. The full 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, voted 12-3 that the government can get the information under a decades-old legal theory that it had already been disclosed to a third party, in this case a telephone company. The ruling overturns a divided 2015 opinion from the court's three-judge panel and reduces the likelihood that the Supreme Court would consider the issue.

  • 5/26   Court rules Dell's $24.9 billion buyout priced 22 percent below fair value

By Tom Hals WILMINGTON, Del (Reuters) - Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners underpriced their 2013 $24.9 billion buyout of Dell Inc [DI.UL] by about 22 percent and may have to pay tens of millions to investors who opposed the deal for the computer maker, a Delaware judge ruled on Tuesday. The fair value of Dell's stock at the time of the buyout was $17.62 per share, not the original price of $13.75 per share, according to Delaware Vice Chancellor Travis Laster. The investors originally sought appraisal on nearly 40 million shares and some claimed a fair value was as high as $25 per share.

Firefighters may soon get a much needed improvement to their infrared imaging systems thanks to a pair of engineers at a research institute in Switzerland. Adrien Birbaumer and Martijn Bosch from École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have created VIZIR, a smart visor for firefighters that will allow them to see thermal images through their breathing mask visor while keeping their hands free. A thermal camera is attached to the firefighters helmet, and looks to be attached via an easily movable arm in case the camera is hit by debris.

  • 26/26   Jenji Kohan is producing a new Netflix comedy about women's wrestling

Orange Is the New Black showrunner Jenji Kohan is keeping her hands full by executive producing GLOW, a new comedy about female wrestling that's just been given a series order by Netflix. It's being created and run by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, and Kohan and Orange Is the New Black producer Tara Herrman are serving as co-executive producers. The opening theme is a sight to behold, mainly because it includes lines like, "We come from the streets, we come from the city / We come from a world where there is no pity!" Truth be told, it looks like something out of a Saturday Night Live sketch, which is exactly why it's serving as fodder for a comedy series.
