By Alexandria Sage and Paul Lienert DETROIT (Reuters) - Google unveiled its latest self-driving system in a Chrysler Pacifica minivan during a Sunday preview ahead of the Detroit auto show, saying the technology is more reliable and affordable. The announcement came from John Krafcik, head of Google's Waymo unit, whose search for partners to develop and install the company's autonomous driving technology into real cars has so far yielded only an alliance with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and a pending deal with Honda Motor Co . Headlining a future mobility conference during the show's media preview, Krafcik said Waymo's latest set of self-driving hardware and software incorporated a new array of sensors, including an enhanced vision system, improved radar and laser-based lidar, all developed and built in-house.

  • 7/26   Apple plans to build computers in the US, but they won't be for consumers

Apple is planning a new initiative to build new computers in the United States — but they won't be Macs. Instead, as reported by Business Insider, the company is aiming to use its existing facility in Mesa, Arizona, to produce servers and data centers to be used in its other US facilities. The filing shows Mesa sought approval from the US Foreign-Trade Zones Board for Apple to create "finished products," including "finished server assembly cabinets." Apple already has authority to produce components for consumer electronics within the Mesa special zone, but if granted, the new approval would let it import parts needed for data centers without customs duty payments.

  • 10/26   Far-right blogger Chuck C. Johnson is reportedly helping vet Trump administration candidates

Far-right blogger Chuck C. Johnson is reportedly helping pick members of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. According to Forbes, multiple anonymous sources say Johnson is working with Trump transition team members — including Facebook board member and de facto Silicon Valley ambassador Peter Thiel — to help suggest and vet candidates. If correct, Johnson’s involvement may be a sign that the Trump team hasn’t distanced itself completely from its far-right, white nationalist fans, with whom Johnson is aligned.

  • 22/26   U.S. Supreme Court will not examine tech industry legal shield

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday boosted one of the tech industry's go-to defenses in suits to hold websites liable for content posted by others, rebuffing an appeal by women who accused an online ad site of promoting child sex trafficking. The high court let stand a lower court's decision last year to dismiss the lawsuit because the Communications Decency Act, a 1996 law protecting free speech on the internet, shielded Backpage from liability for the content of the ads. Tech companies commonly invoke the Communications Decency Act in defending against similar lawsuits.
