  • 30/100   Review: Affleck's stylish 'Live by Night' is by the numbers
    PEOPLE TOPIC NEWS

Ben Affleck is no doubt an ambitious and tasteful filmmaker, but he's gotten himself in a bit of hot water with the bloated period gangster epic "Live by Night ." It looks and sounds right and all the elements are there: A conflicted anti-hero with a granite jaw, a fast-talkin', two-timin' moll, crooked cops, and a sweaty loyal partner. There's the one-last-job-gone-awry, some rum-running, a few epic shootouts and the big questions about whether or not our man has become everything he swore he wouldn't. It seems like enough to hold audience interest for a few hours, but somehow even with all that going for it (not to mention a parade of recognizable faces), "Live by Night" is dull as sin.

Hernandez, 27, who was one of the NFL's top tight ends while playing for the New England Patriots from 2010 to 2012, already is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murdering an acquaintance in June 2013.

  • 73/100   Norway becomes the first country to shut down national analogue radio

Today, Norway will start shutting down analogue radio signals nationally, becoming the first nation in the world to broadcast digital radio only. Norway has offered both FM radio and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) since 1995, but the country’s Ministry of Culture says the price of supporting the older format has become unreasonable. For an eighth of the price, says the Ministry, DAB will offer better audio quality and greater choice — more than 20 national channels as opposed to the five currently offered on FM.

BMW, Volkswagen , Ford and Daimler plan to build about 400 next-generation charging stations in Europe that can reload an electric car in minutes instead of hours. The long time it takes to charge batteries is one of the main disadvantages of electric cars compared to conventional cars with gasoline tanks that can be filled up in seconds.

Oscar-winning movie directors Joel and Ethan Coen are making the leap to the small screen, Variety reports. The duo have written and will direct a TV miniseries called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a Western that sources tell Variety was deemed too broad in scope to tackle in one feature film. It's not clear yet how many episodes the miniseries will run, but Variety says that Annapurna Television — the company partnering with the Coens for the show — is planning to pursue an "innovative approach that could combine television and theatrical." Exactly how the two mediums will be entwined is not yet known, and it's not clear yet when the show will be premiered, nor which network or service it will appear on.

The rusty patched bumble bee, a prized but vanishing pollinator once familiar to much of North America, was listed on Tuesday as an endangered species, becoming the first wild bee in the continental United States to gain such federal protection. One of several species facing sharp declines, the bumble bee known to scientists as Bombus affinis has plunged nearly 90 percent in abundance and distribution since the late 1990s, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The agency listed the insect after determining it to be in danger of extinction across all or portions of its range, attributing its decline to a mix of factors, including disease, pesticides, climate change and habitat loss.

    SCIENCE TOPIC NEWS

Men who regularly eat red meat have a higher risk of developing an inflammatory bowel condition called diverticulitis than men who don't have much red meat in their diet, a new study finds. The men in the study who ate six or more servings of red meat weekly were 58 percent more likely to develop diverticulitis during the 26-year study than the men in the study who ate the least amount, which was 1.2 servings weekly on average. Diverticulitis occurs when the wall of a person's gut bulges out from its usual position and forms a small sac — called a diverticulum — and this sac becomes inflamed, according to the study, published today (Jan. 9) in the journal Gut.
