Germany premiered a spectacular new concert house Wednesday in the northern city of Hamburg, billed as a future national landmark and global attraction, albeit after a cost explosion. At a pre-opening news conference, Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz defended the project, saying that its sold-out concert schedule through July and the more than 500,000 visitors who have already flocked to the building proved the Elbphilharmonie was winning hearts.

Android Wear 2.0, the next iteration of Google’s smartwatch operating system, will be released to the public in February. The calendar date is not yet set in stone, but Google is now notifying developers of an impending release just a few weeks away to help those with unsupported Android Wear code be prepared to update their apps or else find the software unavailable in the Play Store. Yesterday, President-elect Donald Trump met with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a man who believes in the debunked and fraudulent theory that vaccines cause autism. Trump also reportedly asked Kennedy to head a new “commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity.” The purpose of this new commission isn’t exactly clear, but hours after the meeting a Trump spokeswoman said in a statement that the president-elect is “exploring the possibility of forming a commission on Autism.” That statement makes it seems that, once again, Trump is legitimizing a dangerous conspiracy theory that is already putting American lives at risk. Vaccines are key to preventing horrible, debilitating, and often fatal diseases that have been plaguing our society for centuries.

Hormones from drugs like birth control, as well chemicals that mimic hormones, get into the water through normal human usage, because most drugs aren’t completely broken down and used up by the body.

One of several species facing sharp declines, the bumble bee known to scientists as Bombus affinis has plunged nearly 90 percent in abundance and distribution since the late 1990s, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The agency listed the insect after determining it to be in danger of extinction across all or portions of its range, attributing its decline to a mix of factors, including disease, pesticides, climate change and habitat loss.

In comments expected to enrage Beijing, Rex Tillerson told his confirmation hearing before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee that China's building of islands and putting military assets on those islands was "akin to Russia’s taking Crimea” from Ukraine. Asked whether he supported a more aggressive posture toward China, he said: “We’re going to have to send China a clear signal that, first, the island-building stops and, second, your access to those islands also is not going to be allowed.” The former Exxon Mobil Corp chairman and chief executive did not elaborate on what might be done to deny China access to the islands it has built up from South China Sea reefs, equipped with military-length airstrips and fortified with weapons.
