  • 2/26   EU says U.S. explanation of Yahoo email scanning not enough

By Julia Fioretti BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The United States has not satisfied the European Union's concerns about Yahoo's scanning of all customers' incoming emails for U.S. intelligence purposes, the bloc's justice chief told Reuters in an interview. The European Commission, the EU executive, asked the United States in November for clarifications on the secret court order served to Yahoo as part of its monitoring of a new transatlantic pact facilitating the exchange of personal data by businesses. To clinch an agreement on the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield, as the data transfer framework is known, Washington pledged not to engage in mass, indiscriminate surveillance.

  • 3/26   China's anti-Teslas: cheap models drive electric car boom

More electric cars are sold in China than in the rest of the world combined, but are mainly locally-branded models that are cheaper and have a shorter range than those offered by foreign automakers such as Tesla and Nissan . The Chinese-branded electric vehicle (EV) market is propped up by huge government subsidies as part of Beijing's policy to build global leadership in cleaner energy driving. China has spent billions of dollars on subsidies to help companies including Warren Buffett-backed BYD and BAIC Motor achieve large-scale production of plug-in vehicles, which are gaining traction among urban drivers as well as taxi fleets and government agencies.

  • 6/26   Instagram adds advertising to Instagram Stories

Facebook Inc's Instagram is bringing more than 30 advertisers into one of its fastest-growing features, Instagram Stories, in a bid to boost advertising revenue, the company said on Wednesday. The social media company will become a more important player in maintaining Facebook’s growth in advertising revenue in 2017. During the last two earnings calls, Facebook executives said they may soon reach a limit on the amount of ads they can place before users, one of the factors that had driven ad revenue growth.

  • 8/26   Amazon to pay C$1.1 million to settle Canada pricing case

The Canadian unit of Amazon.com will pay a C$1 million ($756,658.60) fine to settle an investigation into pricing activities on its website that gave an inaccurate view of how much consumers could save, Canada's competition watchdog said on Wednesday. After a two-year investigation, the Competition Bureau found that Amazon's practice of comparing its prices to regular prices on its Canadian site gave consumers the impression that the website was selling items at a price lower than the general market. The Competition Bureau said Amazon relied on its suppliers to provide list prices without verifying their accuracy and advertised the savings on its site and in other places.

  • 9/26   China turns to robots as workers age

Flat, orange robots glide under stationary cars and ferry them to empty Chinese parking bays, using space more efficiently and, their creators say, reducing driver stress. It is one of a number of elegant -- and expensive -- mechanical solutions China is turning to as it faces an ageing population, which, even in the world's most populous country, is making workers harder to come by. With an eye on the rising numbers of cars on Chinese roads, Hikvision has been testing a robotic parking system in Wuzhen, 130 kilometres (80 miles) west of Shanghai.

Android Wear 2.0, the next iteration of Google’s smartwatch operating system, will be released to the public in February. Specifically, Google is trying to ensure that developers update their apps to allow them to run in standalone mode, meaning without a dependency on a connected smartphone for connecting to Wi-Fi networks and installing apps.

  • 24/26   Trump's latest health initiative is an attack on lifesaving vaccines

Yesterday, President-elect Donald Trump met with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — a man who believes in the debunked and fraudulent theory that vaccines cause autism. Trump also reportedly asked Kennedy to head a new “commission on vaccine safety and scientific integrity.” The purpose of this new commission isn’t exactly clear, but hours after the meeting a Trump spokeswoman said in a statement that the president-elect is “exploring the possibility of forming a commission on Autism.” That statement makes it seems that, once again, Trump is legitimizing a dangerous conspiracy theory that is already putting American lives at risk. Vaccines are key to preventing horrible, debilitating, and often fatal diseases that have been plaguing our society for centuries.

  • 26/26   Percentage of intersex fish drops after sewage treatment plant upgrades

A sewage treatment plant in Canada has figured out a way to reduce the levels of chemicals that stick around in the treated wastewater, according to a new study. Eliminating them from our water system is important because they are devastating fish populations, and they can end up back in our bodies, too. Hormones from drugs like birth control, as well chemicals that mimic hormones, get into the water through normal human usage, because most drugs aren’t completely broken down and used up by the body.
