  • 12/27   Gold Gets Fed Boost After Powell Flags Rate Cut Amid Global Risk
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Gold rose for a third day after the Federal Reserve indicated that it’s preparing to cut interest rates for the first time in a decade as the global economy slows.Bullion’s trading above $1,400 an ounce again as investors took note of the Fed’s dovishness, damping doubts over monetary policy easing that arose following stronger-than-expected U.S. payrolls data. Speaking to Congress on Wednesday, Chairman Jerome Powell said June’s jobs report was “great news,” but not enough to tilt the balance because wages weren’t rising fast enough to trigger much inflation.Exchange-traded funds backed by the precious metal also received a boost, with holdings rising to 2,311.3 tons as of Wednesday, the highest level since 2013.Gold is trading near a six-year high on the prospects of lower rates, which boost the appeal of non-interest-bearing assets, with geopolitical and trade tensions also spurring demand. Despite a truce between the U.S. and China, Powell stressed downside risks stemming from uncertainties over trade and slowing momentum in some economies. Minutes from the Fed’s June meeting confirmed an inclination among officials to ease policy soon.“Although there will be a few bumps on the way given the level of skepticism in the first gold rally cycle, we think there will be an even greater rush for gold in the coming weeks and months,” Stephen Innes, managing partner at Vanguard Markets Pte, said in a note. “So gold prices could stay on an upward path as central banks pivot to an easing stance, the U.S. dollar turns gradually weaker with a more dovish Fed and the burden of harmful yielding debt rises.”Powell is set to continue with his testimony later Thursday, this time before the Senate Banking Committee. Also on investors’ watch lists is data on U.S. inflation scheduled for release Thursday.Spot gold climbed as much as 0.6% to $1,427.23 an ounce, and was at $1,421.65 at 7:11 a.m. in London. Bullion hit $1,439.21 on June 25, the highest level since 2013. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index dropped 0.2%.In other precious metals, spot silver and platinum were little changed. • 13/27   Norwegian Air CEO steps down, sees 737 MAX flying in Oct
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

Norwegian Air's Bjoern Kjos stepped down on Thursday as chief executive of the budget airline he co-founded. Kjos, a former fighter pilot, helped to build a tiny Norwegian airline housed in pre-fabricated barracks on the edge of Oslo airport into Europe's third-biggest budget carrier by passenger numbers. The airline has shaken up the long-haul market with cut-price transatlantic fares, but its rapid expansion has left it with hefty losses and high debts and it had to raise 3 billion crowns ($350 million) from shareholders earlier this year.

  • 19/27   Blue Chip Bounce: Bandai Namco Limit Up on Nikkei 225 ‘Surprise’
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Shares of Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. surged by their daily limit to a record after the game maker was chosen for inclusion in Japan’s Nikkei 225 Stock Average. The stock rose 1,000 yen, or 19%, to 6,190 yen at the close after it was untraded in the regular session with bids outweighing sell orders by 14-to-1 at one point. That’s the stock’s largest gain, and its highest close, since the 2005 merger that created the company.Bandai Namco will join the blue chip gauge on Aug. 1, replacing Chiyoda Corp., which is being demoted to the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s second section after reporting liabilities in excess of its assets.“This was a surprise to everyone I spoke to after the close yesterday,” analyst Travis Lundy wrote in a note on Smartkarma. Lundy estimates 27 million shares of Bandai Namco will need to be bought as funds tracking the Nikkei 225 seek to match its weightings. That may equal about one-third of the “net available to sell,” given the possibly limited desire among individual and foreign investors to dump the stock now.Quantitative analysts at brokers including Nomura Securities Co. and SMBC Nikko Securities Inc. had expected DMG Mori Co. to be chosen, as the company is in the same capital goods sector as Chiyoda. The Nikkei often picks a stock from the same industry in cases of replacement. DMG Mori’s stock dropped 9.8% to 1,599 yen.Bandai Namco makes games for Nintendo Co.’s Switch console, among other platforms. Demand may rise following Nintendo’s announcement Wednesday of a cheaper version of the Switch. Bandai Namco is also active in mobile games, which may be poised for improved growth in the second half of this year, Bloomberg Intelligence says.Chiyoda fell 2.6% to 305 yen at the close. Given its large price gap with Bandai Namco, the substitution is seen impacting other names on the price-weighted Nikkei 225. Fast Retailing Co. is the most expensive stock on the gauge at 67,650 yen.“We expect this addition of a highly priced stock to reduce the weighting of those stocks that have a high weighting in the Nikkei Average,” Junichi Hashimoto, an analyst at Daiwa Securities Co., wrote in a report.(Updates prices; adds details and quote about index impact in last two paragraphs.)To contact the reporter on this story: Kurt Schussler in Tokyo at kschussler1@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Divya Balji at dbalji1@bloomberg.net, Kurt Schussler, Teo Chian WeiFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

  • 23/27   Oil Rises to Seven-Week High on Gulf Storm, U.S. Stockpiles Draw
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Oil extended gains after closing at a seven-week high as around a third of the Gulf of Mexico’s crude output was cut before a potential hurricane and U.S. crude inventories shrunk more than expected.Futures in New York rose as much as 0.7% after climbing 4.5% on Wednesday to close above $60 a barrel for the first time since May. Major producers from BP Plc to Chevron Corp. have evacuated crews from offshore installations due to the storm, which could grow into a hurricane this week. A fourth weekly draw in American stockpiles and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s signal the central bank is preparing to cut interest rates added to the bullishness.Oil has been rallying since the middle of last week as tensions surrounding Iran stoke concerns crude flows may be disrupted. President Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to impose more sanctions on the Islamic Republic and accused it of violating the nuclear accord that he withdrew from last year, while French President Emmanuel Macron is trying to salvage the deal. Asian stocks climbed and the dollar weakened following Powell’s comments.“Oil markets are being supported by factors peculiar to the summertime -- hurricanes and high gasoline demand,” said Satoru Yoshida, a commodities analyst at Rakuten Securities Inc. in Tokyo. Expectations for a U.S. interest-rate cut and the tension in the Middle East are also helping, he said.West Texas Intermediate crude for August delivery gained 23 cents, or 0.4%, to $60.66 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange as of 7:23 a.m. in London after rising as much as 40 cents earlier. The contract closed at the highest level since May 22 on Wednesday.Brent for September settlement added 22 cents, or 0.3%, to $67.23 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe Exchange. It climbed 4.4% to $67.01 on Wednesday, the highest close since May 29. The global benchmark crude traded at a $6.50 premium to WTI for the same month.Gulf of Mexico operators have shut 602,715 barrels a day of oil production ahead of the storm, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said in a notice. Chevron said Tuesday it began shutting in five of its platforms in the Gulf and will start evacuating all associated personnel. Royal Dutch Shell Plc has also evacuated non-essential personnel at seven platforms and BP also began removing offshore personnel.GULF COAST STORM WRAP: 32% of Oil, 18% of Gas Output Shut (2)The Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday that U.S. crude stockpiles fell by 9.5 million barrels last week to the lowest in almost three months. That compared with the median estimate in a Bloomberg survey for a 2.9 million barrel decline. The situation in the Middle East remained tense.
