  • 12/27   Pound Rises Most Since March on Talk of ‘Pathway’ to Brexit Deal
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- The pound rallied the most against the dollar since March on signs that Britain and the European Union are edging closer to an agreement on the core sticking points in negotiations around Brexit. The gains gathered momentum and one-month options turned the most positive on sterling since January 2018 after U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Irish premier Leo Varadkar said in a statement that they could see a “pathway” to a possible divorce deal following talks in northern England. The pound gained as much as 2.2%, and was last up 1.9% to $1.2439. The advance came against a broadly weakening dollar amid optimism over U.S.-China trade talks. The pound strengthened 1.5% to 88.54 pence for euro. The pound is the day’s strongest Group-of-10 currency relative to the dollar, and it’s on course for the largest advance since the U.K. Parliament rejected leaving the EU without a deal in March.“This sharp bounce seems to confirm the presence of lingering speculative short positions in the pound that are being unwound in a scramble in late trade,” said Koon Chow, a strategist at Union Bancaire Privee. “Although the joint statement was light on details, it strengthens our expectation that there will be an extension rather than a no-deal Brexit at the end of this month. But there are still election risks, and accordingly a pound recovery has some obstacles ahead.”EU leaders will meet next week for a summit that may determine whether Britain will reach an accord, seek an extension, or head for a hard exit that some banks expect could wipe 10% off the value of the U.K. currency.“Worryingly, we have no clever way to judge the likelihood of today’s optimism lasting until the weekend, let alone longer,” SocGen analysts wrote in a note dated Thursday. “But sterling’s bounce highlights the market’s pricing of the likelihood of a no-deal exit. Take that off the table and EUR/GBP will return to 0.85.”\--With assistance from Mark Tannenbaum. To contact the reporters on this story: William Shaw in London at wshaw20@bloomberg.net;Michael Hunter in London at mhunter72@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Paul Dobson at pdobson2@bloomberg.net, Anil VarmaFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

Millions of retirees will get a modest 1.6% cost-of-living increase from Social Security in 2020, an uptick with potential political consequences in an election year when Democrats are pushing more generous inflation protection. The increase amounts to $24 a month for the average retired worker, according to estimates released Thursday by the Social Security Administration. Following a significant boost this year, the cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, for 2020 reverts to its pattern of moderate gains.

  • 16/27   House Committees Subpoena Indicted Giuliani Associates
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

The House Democrats leading the impeachment probe into President Trump issued subpoenas Thursday to two associates of Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, after the men were arrested earlier in the day on campaign-finance charges. The chairmen of the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, and Oversight and Reform Committees subpoenaed Florida businessmen Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, who are from the former Soviet Union, for documents and information they may have relevant to the impeachment inquiry. Giuliani previously said he had worked with the two in his push for Ukraine to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.“Your clients are private citizens who are not employees of the Executive Branch," the chairmen wrote to attorney John Dowd, who previously served as Trump's personal attorney and now represents Parnas and Fruman. "They may not evade requests from Congress for documents and information necessary to conduct our inquiry. They are required by law to comply with the enclosed subpoenas."The chairmen also took a shot at Trump, saying that others will not be allowed to follow his example of obstructing Congress."[Parnas and Fruman] are not exempted from this requirement merely because they happen to work with Mr. Giuliani, and they may not defy congressional subpoenas merely because President Trump has chosen the path of denial, defiance, and obstruction," they wrote, adding that the deadline for the men to turn over the requested information was October 16.The House subpoenas come after a week in which the White House has signaled that it has no intention of cooperating with the probe.“Because participating in this inquiry under the current unconstitutional posture would inflict lasting institutional harm on the Executive Branch and lasting damage to the separation of powers, you have left the President no choice,” White House lawyer Pat Cipollone wrote in a letter to House Democrats on Tuesday.

    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

President Donald Trump has enlisted parts of the U.S. government and key allies in the pursuit of unproven or disproven conspiracy theories, some incubated in the dark and anonymous corners of the internet. Text messages between U.S. diplomats, a whistleblower complaint and a series of public statements by Trump and other officials in recent days offer the clearest view yet of the extent to which the president has used the government to chase accusations that secret forces have been plotting against him. Much of that evidence has surfaced because of an impeachment inquiry led by Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

  • 20/27   Trump Adviser Claims Chinese Gave Him ‘Quite a Bit of Background’ on Hunter Biden
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

Michael Pillsbury, the director for Chinese strategy at the D.C.-based Hudson Institute think tank and one of President Trump's advisers on China, told The Financial Times that he'd asked Chinese officials about Hunter Biden’s dealings in the country and gotten “quite a bit of background” in response.Pillsbury, whom President Trump once called “probably the leading authority on China,” first claimed on-air with Fox Business Channel’s Lou Dobbs that he brought up Hunter Biden during a visit to Beijing last week.“I have never seen them get so secretive in my life,” he said. “They would discuss ICBM warheads rather than talk about what Hunter Biden was doing in China with Vice President Biden. That is a big area now where the Chinese know they don’t want any American probe into what happened with Hunter Biden.”The Times then reported that Pillsbury had confirmed the story to its reporter, and quoted him as saying he'd gotten "quite a bit of background" on the younger Biden's dealings from his Chinese contacts. Last week President Trump said in a press conference that “China should start an investigation into the Bidens.”Pillsbury later backtracked, telling C-Span that he hadn't “spoken to the Financial Times for a month.” But Demetri Sevastopulo, the Times's Washington bureau chief, subsequently took to Twitter to post a picture of an email exchange with Pillsbury from yesterday.> Apparently Mike (@mikepillsbury) denied on C-Span that he told me this (https://t.co/xlKuY17OUk). > > But here is the email exchange with him last night (and our story: https://t.co/BQgi3TcH1y). https://t.co/8p4Ohcg7vI pic.twitter.com/FEK8LaOgBM> > -- Demetri Sevastopulo (@Dimi) October 10, 2019Pillsbury replied by telling the Washington Post that everything he'd learned “was already public or well-known,” and reiterating that the Chinese "really, really didn't want to talk about" Hunter Biden.

    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

The sunsets are a sight to behold in Joe Leonard's neck of the woods these days. A year ago, lush stands of towering pines obscured the horizon, he said as he drove his pickup along a dusty Florida Panhandle road.
