Could cheerleading be the most progressive sport in terms of gender roles? New research from the University of East Anglia indicates that the traditionally female-centered activity can help participants of both sexes challenge stereotypes about girls in sports. The study, which was published in the journal Sport in Society: Cultures, Commerce, Media, Politics, tracked the growing popularity of cheerleading in the U.K. and focused on the members of four cheerleading teams. “The participants in our study talked about flipping gender norms in cheerleading,” Dr. Amy Pressland, a co-author of the study, tells Yahoo Parenting.

  • 15/74   High School Quarterback’s Tragic Death Highlights Silent Danger of an Enlarged Spleen
    SPORTS TOPIC NEWS

A spleen can become enlarged for many reasons, including genetic diseases, William Katkov, MD, a gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., tells Yahoo Health. Here’s why that’s a problem: A person may feel better and resume their normal activities, but their enlarged spleen is more susceptible to rupturing and may no longer be protected by their ribcage, leaving it incredibly vulnerable to injury. “An enlarged spleen is at an increased risk for rupture or injury in the setting of normal trauma, like a football game, diving into a pool, or minor car accident,” Katkov says. While an enlarged spleen can be asymptomatic, Katkov says a person can feel uncomfortable or have a feeling of fullness in their upper abdomen on the left side.

  • 53/74   ‘Nobel Prize for Trump!’: Newsroom readers cheer Kim Jong Un news
    POLITICS TOPIC NEWS

“IF Trump can denuclearize North Korea then that would definitely be winning!” “Not a Trump supporter at all but I give credit when due and this is great news.” Trump’s announcement that he plans to meet with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is drawing an overwhelmingly positive reaction on Newsroom — across party lines.

President Trump has accepted Kim Jong Un’s invitation to meet sometime between now and May. Thursday evening, Trump tweeted: "Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!"

The story has generated thousands of comments, with most readers cheering Trump: “I’m an independent and I applaud any success we have as a nation.” “This could really be a game changer.”

If, and when, the meeting happens, Trump would be the first sitting president to speak with a North Korean leader.

What do you think? Is this a victory for Trump? Join the conversation in Newsroom.

Xenon, one of Earth’s rarest and most mysterious gases, has left scientists puzzled for decades. In an effort to solve what scientists often call “the missing Xe paradox” a team of international researchers examined the theory that xenon is tucked away deep inside our planet’s core. Previous findings have found that just like the other six noble gases—argon, helium, neon, krypton, radon and oganesson—xenon is unreactive, meaning it doesn’t mix well with other compounds or elements.
