    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Investors in frontier-market bonds are on course to get their best returns in seven years. It looks like it’ll be a lot tougher in 2020.Some of the biggest money managers are already becoming more selective. BNP Paribas Asset Management, which oversees almost $500 billion in assets, is sticking to countries with sound fiscal management such as Ivory Coast, or those with investment-grade ratings like Kazakhstan, Uruguay and Morocco. Aberdeen Standard Investments sees opportunities to get above-market returns by buying the bonds of Sri Lanka, Ecuador and Ghana.Rising debt loads and the increasing prospect of defaults in Argentina, Lebanon and Zambia are making investors more nervous. The International Monetary Fund’s estimate that the world economy is growing at its slowest pace in a decade is scarcely helping.“We’re going to have more and more defaults in the asset class,” said Bryan Carter, London-based head of emerging-markets fixed income at BNP Paribas Asset. “Argentina, Lebanon, Zambia -- they’re coming up. And there are very few frontier markets that are investment grade.”Read more: What Are Frontier Markets and Why Invest in Them?Rising DebtTotal debt in frontier markets rose to a record $3.2 trillion in the second quarter of 2019, equivalent to 115% of gross domestic, according to the Washington-based Institute of International Finance, which covers about 30 such countries. More than 40% are under “debt stress or at high risk,” nearly double the proportion in 2013, it said in a report on Oct. 31.JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s Next Generation Markets Index, which tracks the dollar debt of what it calls pre-emerging countries, reached a record high this month. That’s happened as the increased pile of negative-yielding securities -- now about $12.5 trillion -- and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s monetary easing caused investors to buy riskier assets. The average yield for the Next Generation index is 6.3%, about 117 basis points above that for emerging markets overall. It’s gained 17% this year, the most since 2012 and beating the 13.2% return on the bonds of developing nations as a whole.Read related story: Premium on Frontier Dollar Debt Attracts Yield Seekers: ChartAssets in Aberdeen’s frontier-market funds more than doubled over the past year to about $600 million, according to Kevin Daly, investment director for emerging-market debt in London. NN Investment Partners’s equivalent funds grew nearly 30% to $390 million in the first nine months of the year, said Leo Hu, the firm’s Singapore-based senior portfolio manager.Reduced U.S.-China trade tensions, steady Chinese growth and the Fed and European Central Bank retaining dovish stances will be a pre-requisite for the less developed emerging markets to reap “low double-digit” returns next year, Hu said.(Updates with investor comments in fourth paragraph)To contact the reporter on this story: Lilian Karunungan in Singapore at lkarunungan@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Tomoko Yamazaki at tyamazaki@bloomberg.net, Paul WallaceFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

  • 22/27   German finance watchdog approves new AMS bid for Osram
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

German finance watchdog Bafin has approved AMS's renewed $5 billion takeover bid for Osram , kicking off another four-week offer period in which investors of the German lighting group can tender their shares, AMS said on Thursday. The Austrian sensor maker failed with a first offer at the same price of 41 euros ($45.38) per Osram share last month, a setback for Chief Executive Alexander Everke's plan to form a European leader for integrated sensor and lighting solutions. Some investors had hoped for a higher offer from private equity groups Bain Capital and Advent, which they had signalled but then refrained from after AMS's miss.

  • 26/27   Commerzbank Cuts Profit Outlook
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Want the lowdown on European markets? In your inbox before the open, every day. Sign up here.Commerzbank AG downgraded its full-year profit outlook, marking a second retreat in just weeks by Chief Executive Officer Martin Zielke as he grapples with negative interest rates and increased competition. The bank said consolidated net income for this year will now probably be lower than in 2018, down from the lender’s target of a slight increase, because of negative interest rates and higher taxes this quarter. The more pessimistic outlook comes after the lender abandoned its ambitions of increasing revenue this year at the end of September.Zielke also then unveiled a new round of cost cuts as well as a fresh set of longer-term financial targets after a period in which he’d successively scrapped most of the bank’s previous goals. Commerzbank has been hit by margin erosion through tough competition in its home market and negative interest rates set by the European Central Bank and said on Thursday conditions have further worsened.“The main reason for the adjustment was the uncertain macroeconomic environment, in particular the worsening global trade conflicts,” Commerzbank said in the statement. “The further monetary policy easing announced by the European Central Bank in September and the resulting pressure on margins will also have a negative impact on earnings.”Several top investors and regulators have privately expressed skepticism about the latest turnaround plan, people familiar with the matter have said. In addition to promising to reduce the workforce by over 2,000, Zielke has also said he’s selling one of the company’s strongest profit engines, its Polish subsidiary mBank, while saying profitability will remain well below that of the competition for at least the next four years.Commerzbank last week released preliminary results for the third quarter showing net income jumped 35% in the period as risk provisions and other costs declined. The bank also sold a unit in the quarter, accounting for one-off revenue of 103 million euros ($114 million).Corporate ClientsThe corporate clients division, which has long been a particularly sore spot, continued to show a weak performance as revenue fell for a fifth consecutive quarter. The current division head Michael Reuther, will be succeeded in January by former ING Groep NV executive Roland Boekhout. The bank is also seeing more change in the board, with Chief Financial Officer Stephan Engels set to join Danske Bank A/S.Though the lender’s other core division, the one catering to retail clients, posted revenue growth, most of that came from the Polish subsidiary it’s now seeking to sell. By contrast, the German retail unit, which is the division’s biggest source of revenue by far, contracted 6%. The bank has said it’s shifting its focus from rapid client acquisition to getting existing clients to spend more money on banking services. As part of the September revamp, the lender also decided to scrap its previous promise -- and a major element of its previous marketing campaign -- to keep a network of about 1,000 branches in Germany. The retail division under Michael Mandel said it’s going to close about a fifth of those.(Updates with details about core divisions in final three paragraphs.)To contact the reporter on this story: Steven Arons in Frankfurt at sarons@bloomberg.netTo contact the editors responsible for this story: Dale Crofts at dcrofts@bloomberg.net, Ross LarsenFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.
