  • 13/27   Singapore Sees Negative Rates Creep In With Flush Liquidity
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Negative interest rates are creeping into Singapore. The nation’s overnight borrowing rate was less than two basis points above zero on Tuesday, down from the year’s high of 1.68% in January. The one-month swap offer rate, the cost to borrow the city’s currency for dollar investors, fell below zero on Wednesday for the first time in almost nine years. The plunge in money-market rates comes as the Monetary Authority of Singapore promised to provide sufficient liquidity in the financial system to cope with a virus-induced crunch. As the MAS doesn’t set rates, but instead manages the currency against major trading partners as a policy tool, the city-state’s borrowing costs tend to track U.S. benchmarks.“The rates effect is a possible by-product of MAS operations meant to ensure sufficient” liquidity, said Vishnu Varathan, head of economics and strategy at Mizuho Bank Ltd. in Singapore. But, it’s “certainly not an intent,” he said. The one-month swap rate dropped to minus 0.01141% on Wednesday, the lowest since August 2011. The gauge, computed from the benchmark dollar interbank rate and Singapore dollar forwards, also reflects expectations for the Asian nation’s currency and its liquidity. The city state has forecast that the economy could contract by as much as 4% this year due to the coronavirus outbreak. In March, the MAS lowered the midpoint of the currency band and reduced the slope to zero, seeking no appreciation in the exchange rate. A month later, it eased capital requirements to give banks more room to bolster lending.“If Singapore dollar liquidity becomes too flush, relative to the U.S. dollar, the financial sector may be willing to swap Singapore dollars for U.S. dollars at very low Singapore dollar interest rates,” strategists at DBS Bank Ltd., including Eugene Leow, wrote in a research note. “This appears to be the case now.”Singapore’s overnight borrowing rate has never gone negative before based on data compiled by Bloomberg.(Updates with one-month swap rate dropping to negative in second paragraph)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

  • 15/27   Abu Dhabi Wealth Fund Sees U-Shaped Global Rebound Next Year
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- The global economy is likely to recover from this year’s virus-driven recession with 5% growth in 2021, according to Abu Dhabi’s $220 billion wealth fund. The most likely outcome following the economic crisis sparked by the coronavirus is a U-shaped rebound, meaning there will be some stagnation before things get better, said Musabbeh Al Kaabi, chief executive officer of the Petroleum & Petrochemicals division of Mubadala Investment Co. The fund -- with holdings across healthcare, technology, aerospace and energy -- gives that scenario a 70% probability and sees a 30% chance of a longer economic slump, Al Kaabi said.As the pandemic forced factories all over the world to shutter and people to stay home, the global economy has plummeted and oil prices have dropped by almost half since the start of the year. Though they’ve risen in the past month as activity resumes in nations such as China, demand for crude is likely to peak within 10 years at most with the growing adoption of cleaner energy, Al Kaabi said.“We are not in a state of denial, we understand the energy transition,” Al Kaabi said Wednesday, in a virtual energy forum hosted by the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based think tank. Energy markets will see stronger demand for natural gas and Mubadala is skewing its investments in that direction, he said. The drop in crude has halted growth in U.S. shale as many wells are not economic with prices below $35 a barrel, but it won’t completely kill the industry, Al Kaabi said.Mubadala’s energy and chemicals business is slowing investment in some projects that aren’t critical to operations. Spending on major projects like a Malaysian gas development and Belgian and North American chemical expansions are going ahead as planned, Al Kaabi said.Mubadala’s oil and chemicals unit has been selling assets after combining with another Abu Dhabi investment fund. In March, it sold part of plastics maker Borealis AG to Austrian partner OMV AG. Last year, the company sold a stake in its Spanish refining unit to Carlyle Group Inc. The deals were valued at nearly $5 billion each. The company has instead invested in gas fields closer to home in the last two years, buying stakes in deposits in Egypt.(Updates third paragraph with oil-price moves.)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.

(Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Lufthansa AG said it’s close to a multibillion euro bailout deal that would see the state become its biggest shareholder after the coronavirus punctured a decades-long boom in air travel.Lufthansa confirmed in a statement it’s in advanced talks with Germany’s WSF Economic Stabilization Fund for aid of as much as 9 billion euros ($9.9 billion). The package would include a 3 billion euro loan, a so-called silent participation and the WSF obtaining a 20% stake through a capital issuance, Lufthansa said. The government would also receive a convertible bond equivalent to an additional 5% plus one share of the company’s increased capital. Under German law, a 25% plus one share stake would enable the state to block motions at annual general meetings, giving it a veto over hostile takeover attempts.“A decision can be expected shortly,” Merkel said late Wednesday in Berlin, adding that “intensive talks” were ongoing with the company and the European Commission, which would need to approve a deal. She declined to go into details, saying: “I would give the advice: wait for the talks to end.”Lufthansa also said two seats on its supervisory board are to be filled in agreement with the German government. It didn’t say whether these would be political or independent figures, a matter under discussion in negotiations.Tense TalksIf agreed, the deal outlined by Lufthansa would bring the curtain down on weeks of tense negotiations between the company and state officials. It would also set the scene for a dramatic extraordinary general meeting at which shareholders will have to vote on whether to accept a package that would dilute their own stakes.Lufthansa would issue the additional capital to the government for the nominal price of 2.56 euros, a steep discount that would allow the state to profit from any upside to the company’s share price. The contours of a deal come after the airline warned in a letter that cash reserves continued to shrink while it negotiates the rescue package. Lufthansa’s board said it hoped the government would find the “political will” for a deal that would keep the carrier competitive against international airlines.Lufthansa gained 4.3% to 8.28 euros in late trading Wednesday after regular Frankfurt hours. The stock has lost half its value this year. The German government and Lufthansa have been locked in intense negotiations for weeks over the rescue plan. While the Economy Ministry and Finance Ministry internally agreed on taking a stake of 25% plus one share, the company had opposed the move, people familiar with the matter said earlier.Lufthansa executives had raised concerns that the terms on offer would hamstring it against international competitors who’ve received less stringent bailout conditions, a point the management board repeated in the letter to employees. While the deal is finalized, Lufthansa is running out of time and money, burning through 800 million euros each month after the coronavirus grounded most of its fleet. Chief Executive Officer Carsten Spohr said on May 5 that the company had about 4 billion euros in cash remaining.300 PlanesThe letter to employees this week gave further details of Lufthansa’s expected fleet reductions for the coming years. The board said it expected 300 of its aircraft would remain grounded in 2021 as demand for flying recovers only slowly, with 200 remaining out of service into 2022.Lufthansa had previously said it expected its pre-crisis fleet of around 760 aircraft to be around 100 smaller once normality returns around 2023, a forecast it stuck to in the letter.Spohr earlier this month said the airline is in “intense” talks with Airbus SE and Boeing Co. about postponing plane deliveries as he set out plans for surviving the coronavirus storm.(Retops with company confirmation)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2020 Bloomberg L.P.
