The patent calls for a giant sticker to be placed on the front end of a vehicle, with a special coating over the layer that is only broken when something collides with the vehicle, exposing the adhesive and helping the colliding object to remain on the vehicle. The idea is to prevent a pedestrian from being thrown after the impact and potentially sustaining even more injuries.

    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Standard Chartered Plc delivered earnings that topped estimates, and the Asia-focused lender gave a bullish view on bad debt charges in the months ahead. The bank set aside $1.57 billion for potential loan losses in the first six months and said second-half provisions will be lower, according to a statement on Thursday. However, it warned the uncertain economic backdrop presented a risk to its plans as the onslaught of the coronoavirus pandemic hits its global counterparts such as Spain’s Banco Santander SA and Britain’s Barclays Plc.“Low interest rates and depressed oil prices continue to be headwinds and we expect new waves of COVID-19 related challenge in the coming quarters, but I am confident that our resilience and client franchise will see us through,” said Chief Executive Officer Bill Winters in the statement.Like its Wall Street rivals, Standard Chartered was able to earn billions of dollars trading on resurgent financial markets, and the bank reported a 35% rise in revenue for that division. Those profits helped offset falls in earnings from other areas such as transaction banking and wealth management as corporate customers struggled. The London-based bank whose largest market is Hong Kong, reported a higher than expected first-half pretax profit of $1.96 billion. It also said income in the second-half is expected to be lower year on year. The bank has embarked on a new round of job cuts, joining rivals such as Deutsche Bank AG and HSBC Holdings Plc in restarting reductions put on hold at the outset of the pandemic, Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday. The firm has drawn up lists of several hundred jobs it plans to eliminate and a cutback program is set to get underway, according to a person familiar with the situation. The company employs about 85,000 people.Standard Chartered’s results come days before HSBC publishes its own half-year figures. • 22/27   Gold Takes Breather After Nine-Day Rally as Fed Flags Virus Risk
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

(Bloomberg) -- Gold paused after rallying for nine days to a record on a slight uptick in the dollar as investors weighed comments from the Federal Reserve on uncertainties over the economic recovery amid the coronavirus pandemic.Bullion has been supported as the U.S. central bank left interest rates near zero and vowed to use all its tools to drive the recovery from the downturn that Chair Jerome Powell called the most severe “in our lifetime.” He sounded a dour tone, noting that more fallout from the outbreak still lies ahead. U.S. deaths surpassed 150,000, the highest official toll in the world.Gold has soared almost 30% to a record this year as the pandemic drove demand for havens amid a weaker dollar and low interest rates. With more stimulus on the horizon, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has said that bullion is the currency of last resort and forecasts a surge to $2,300 an ounce. Real yields on 10-year U.S. Treasuries are sinking toward -1%.“Gold should continue to rise higher after the Fed’s promise to keep the stimulus coming,” Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda Corp., said in a note. “The Fed’s backstop is not going away, but if Congress botches the size and timing of the coronavirus relief bill, gold could consolidate before breaking beyond the $2,000 level.”Another round of talks between the Trump administration and congressional Democrats Wednesday brought them no closer to a compromise on a virus-relief plan, as enhanced unemployment insurance for millions of out-of-work Americans runs out. In his remarks, Powell said supporting the recovery would need help from both monetary and fiscal policy.Data due Thursday are forecast to show U.S. gross domestic product plummeted an annualized 34.8% in the second quarter, the most in records dating back to the 1940s, after the spread of Covid-19 prompted Americans to stay home and states to order widespread lockdowns.Spot gold was 0.6% lower at $1,959.69 an ounce at 7:29 a.m. in London, after hitting an all-time high of $1,981.27 on Tuesday. Gold futures were steady at $1,975.50 after peaking at $2,000 this week.Spot silver fell 2% to $23.8425 an ounce, and is down for a third day. • 25/27   Total reports second-quarter net profit dive, maintains dividend
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

French energy major Total reported a 96% fall in second-quarter net profit to $126 million on Thursday as the coronavirus knocked oil prices and demand but said it would maintain its dividend. Total said its cash flow from operations fell 44% to $3.47 billion, but its adjusted net income was positive and its gearing was under control. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patrick Pouyanne said the cash flow, and reduced spending, would enable Total to maintain a dividend of 0.66 euros ($0.7781) per share and that it was sustainable at that level with Brent crude at $40 per barrel, just below its current price.

  • 26/27   Sales at Birkin bag maker Hermes tumble 42% in second quarter
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

French luxury group Hermes said on Thursday comparable sales in the second quarter fell by 42% due to the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic and that the impact of the health crisis for the whole year was too difficult to assess at this stage. Hermes, maker of the $10,000-plus Birkin bag, said sales were now growing strongly in Asia again after the lockdown was eased and that all stores were open there. The situation remained 'difficult', even though it was improving, in Europe and the United States, CEO Axel Dumas told reporters.

  • 27/27   Nestle sees slower growth this year as stockpiling effect wanes
    TECHNOLOGY TOPIC NEWS

Nestle cut its full-year underlying sales growth forecast to 2-3% on Thursday, saying demand had slowed as customers worked their way through cupboards they stocked up with food at the start of coronavirus related-lockdowns. Packaged food companies have weathered the crisis better than other industries as consumers bought coffee, pasta or infant formula in bulk during COVID-related lockdowns, although Nestle's business supplying restaurants and cafes has suffered. Organic sales growth, which excludes the effect of currency swings and acquisitions, eased to 1.3% in the three months to June, from 4.3% in the first quarter, the maker of KitKat chocolate bars said in a statement.
