Finding Altamira
Finding Altamira
In 1879, Spanish archaeologist Marcelino (Antonio Banderas) and his daughter Maria (Allegra Allen) discover seemingly impossible paintings of galloping bison adorning the walls of a hidden cave. The cave of Altamira brings the world together in amazement, drawing people of all types to see the paintings in person. But, Marcelino soon realizes that the art on the walls must be 10,000 years old, earlier than anyone believes possible. The theory threatens to tear Maria and Marcelino’s family apart while the outside world’s astonishment soon turns to fury and fear. The Catholic Church sees his claims as an attack on biblical truth while scientists prove just as dogmatic and reactionary. Maria’s fairytale world grows darker as her family faces disaster and Marcelino’s discovery is repressed. Only their love for each other can guide them toward redemption as Marcelino fights to spread the truth.

The Shrine at Altamira
The Shrine at Altamira
Now available in a Grove paperback edition, The Shrine at Altamira by John L'Heureux has the simple shape and powerful impact of Greek tragedy. When Maria Corazon Alvarez meets Russell Whitaker at a school dance, she sees his blue eyes and solid American name as a ticket out of the ghetto into a better life. They dance, they touch, they tumble into a love so strong and elemental it should last forever. But gradually the balance shifts; he loves her more, she loves him less. When their son is born, Maria gives him all her love and Russell is pushed aside. Wild, obsessed, Russell runs mad and his desperate love becomes a fire that consumes them all.

New Art of Cookery: A Spanish Friar's Kitchen Notebook by Juan Altamiras
New Art of Cookery: A Spanish Friar's Kitchen Notebook by Juan Altamiras
Winner of the Jane Grigson Trust Award 2017 and the Aragonese Academy of Gastronomy’s 2017 Prize for Research New Art of Cookery, Drawn from the School of Economic Experience, was an influential recipe book published in 1745 by Spanish friary cook Juan Altamiras. In it, he wrote up over 200 recipes for meat, poultry, game, salted and fresh fish, vegetables and sweet things in a chatty style aimed at readers who cooked on a modest budget. He showed that economic cookery could be delicious if flavors and aromas were blended with an appreciation for all sorts of ingredients, however humble, and for diverse food cultures, ranging from that of Aragon, his home region, to those of Iberian court and New World kitchens. This first English translation gives guidelines for today’s cooks alongside the original text, and interweaves a new narrative portraying 18th-century Spain, its everyday life, and food culture. The author traces links between New Art’s dishes and modern Spanish cookery, tells the story of her search to identify the book’s author and understand the popularity of his book for over 150 years, and takes travelers, cooks, historians, and students of Spanish language, culture, and gastronomy on a fascinating journey to the world of Altamiras and, most important of all, his kitchen.

The group's typically taut yet spacious arrangements are now extended and amplified by the inclusion of guests Renee Baker on viola, and Nick Mazzarella on alto sax on 3 of 7 songs. -- And while improvisation is present via a host of compelling solos, over half of the album features through-composed works that represent another departure. The variety of expression in the compositions has also widened and gained in color, with a corresponding closer attention being paid to the details of the group interplay. -- From the noir-draped inflections of No Demons Return, and the pristine open-sea electricity of Evergreen, to the minimalist cinematic ritualism of The Well-Wishers, the most spirited and nuanced tracks arguably yet recorded by Darts & Arrows find a collective home on Altamira, melding as a single mosaic in the most cohesive statement of their career. is a collaborative band that eliminates the boundaries between composition and improvisation. -- -- (Source: artist website) -- UPC 7071676143325 -- The Amazon ASIN for the mp3 version of this CD is (not known) -- Another listing by Zip
