National Poison Prevention Week is observed in the United States the third week of March. The goal of the week is to raise awareness of the risk of being poisoned by household products, medicines, pesticides, plants, bites and stings, food poisoning, and fumes. Awareness being duly raised, it is hoped that this will prevent poisoning.

Origin John F. Kennedy, who proclaimed National Poison Prevention Week in early 1962, together with his son, John F. Kennedy, Jr. National Poison Prevention Week is particularly concerned with preventing the poisoning of children, who are the major victims of poisoning.

On September 26, 1961, the 87th United States Congress passed a joint resolution (Public Law 87-319) requesting that the President of the United States proclaim the third week of March National Poison Prevention Week. On February 7, 1962, President John F. Kennedy responded to this request and proclaimed the third week of March as National Poison Prevention Week. The first National Poison Prevention Week was therefore observed in March 1962.

Poisoning: A National Scourge

More than two million potential poison exposures are reported every year to American poison control centers. More than 90% of these poisoning occur in the home, and a majority of these occur with children 5 years of age and younger.

Though calls regarding children still make up more than half of all calls to poison control centers, they only account for a small percent of the deaths due to poisoning. Poisoning of adults is on the rise in our nation and only stands behind motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths.

Over 1000 Americans die from poisoning every year.

Poisoning: Prevent It

The American Association of Poison Control Centers, representing the poison control center network of the United States, offers the following poison prevention tips:

  1. If you think someone has been poisoned, call 1-800-222-1222 right away. Serious poisonings don't always have early signs.
  2. Put the number for your poison control center (1-800-222-1222) in your cell phone and near home phones.
  3. Keep medicines and household products in their original containers in a different place than food.
  4. Always read product labels and follow any directions.
  5. Keep household products and medicines locked up. Put them where kids can't see them or reach them.
  6. Buy products with child-resistant packaging. But remember, nothing is child-proof.
  7. Never call medicine "candy." Poisons may look like food or drink. Teach children to ask an adult before tasting anything.
  8. Learn about products and drugs that young people use to get "high." Talk to your teen or pre-teen about these dangers.
  9. Have a working carbon monoxide alarm in your home.

Call 1-800-222-1222 to reach your local poison control center, anywhere in the United States. The call is free, private, 24/7/365, and expert help is available in more than 150 languages.

The National Poison Prevention Week Council

The National Poison Week Prevention Week Council was established in early 1962 to oversee the national observation of National Poison Prevention Week.

Why create a 5-week plan? The reason is simple, to not only help you reach one goal, but keep track of all your goals. The “To Do” checklists in here are going to help you keep your focus on what’s important. By looking at it every day you maintain the focus you need to stay driven and on task. Remember that life gets in the way if you let it. I let it get in the way too often when all I wanted was to stay on task or at least accomplish something every day that would take me closer to the goal. We all lose focus, but it helps when we can plan something to be done each day to get s to the goal, the to do lists helps us do at least one thing to get us to our goals and reach our dreams. The purpose of this journal is to help you build your daily checklist. Let’s go over the pros and cons of building a to-do checklist. It should not be something you put together quickly. Most of us do, we have a checklist then we add to it then we think of another thing and jot that down. Soon you have a huge checklist that becomes next to impossible to complete everything. Now you must think about what you want to do, but you don’t want to lose your idea or your task. So, what do you do? I think that you should gather in a master checklist. Do you ever feel overwhelmed? Do you feel there aren’t enough hours in the day? Did you ever look at what you’ve done only to realize that many of them were not that important? Here is what I am asking you to do, create a master checklist for your daily tasks. Think about what you want to get done. You don’t need all the details, but you do need to remember to do the task. This is what you can do. You can list them all out the week ahead of time, maybe even a month prior if you’re working on a larger project. This is how you can get back on track. Make time each week to plan your week out. Set up priorities. It may be that they change from day to day, but here is an opportunity for you to take control of your time each day by taking an hour or so to plan the week. Then, at the end of each day, prioritize the next day. This will help you go into the day prepared with a plan. Things may come up that throw you off, but this may help you prioritize when those surprises come up that are not important, these checklists can have you take a breath, look over your list, and think about what is more important. What you’re doing here is responding, not reacting. Did you ever have someone else’s problem become your problem? I was an engineer that worked on problems. The problem with other people’s problems is that they become your problems even if they are not your problem. If you react, then you’re going to help them, which is a gut reaction, you want to help people, right? But, at what cost to you? Are you really helping them or are they coming to you to save themselves time? Would it be better if you would tell them what to do instead of doing it for them? Of course, it would be better if you could teach them what to do rather than doing it for them. If your job is support, then you may have a different answer, but I spend a lot of hours getting interrupted by people that don’t really need my help, but they want me to do it for them. It is up to you to teach them to do it themselves and then get back to what is important to you and your life, whatever it might be. If you are interrupted by a work call when you are taking care of your kids or out on a date, what would you do? For one, if you’re not on call, you probably would not respond, or you would try to handle it quick. Now, what if our kid is screaming because they got hurt? Then you would not care about the call; you would tend to the child. I know this is extreme, but you need to stay focused on the big picture. What is important to you? Think about that than put that at the top of your list and the to-do checklist can get you there. If it helps, think of the goal that you’re trying to reach.

The My Home Budget Journal is different than many other types of budget books. This budget planner focuses on budgeting from a weekly perspective. Budget your bills, savings and other goals based on your upcoming paycheck or projected paychecks. You can budget one week at a time if you paycheck changes often, or plan several weeks ahead. Use pencil if you suspect things will change or create a general budget and make adjustments needed. The journal is set up to help you focus on week-by-week budgeting for 4-6 weeks at a time. The main worksheet in the book has a top section for weekly income. List your income, your spouse’s income and any additional income you have coming in. There is an income total so you know exactly what is projected to come in each week. If you have more than five streams of weekly income, we recommend adding all of these incomes together and then listing the total for all of these in the “Other Income” section. The template also has up to 15 sections for you to fill in your expenses on a weekly basis. Include everything from groceries, to gas and other bills that you plan on paying only on that particular week and date when the money comes in. Many people will have several blank sections and this is great because that means you don’t have as many weekly bills as you think. Some weeks might be more packed with bills and expenses than others. Each page of the bill worksheet has a place for notes and reminders as well. Write down reminders such as: Finish your taxes, buy Girl Scout cookies from Bethany’s friend or time to buy clothes this week. This worksheet is fully customizable so feel free to fully utilize it so that you can stop on top of your bills and expenses. As you progress through the book you’ll also find sections for financial goals and additional pages for journaling.
