Rainy Day Music
Rainy Day Music
Rainy Day Music begins the next chapter in the storied career of The Jayhawks - a band readily cited as among the pioneers of the 'alt country' sound. The Jayhawks' seventh album backs away from their 'super-pop' releases like Smile and the underrated Sound of Lies and looks back to their earlier, rootsier sound.A crisp, gorgeous collection of songs, the back-to basics Rainy Day Music took The Jayhawks a mere six weeks to record and mix from start to finish. The album channels the ghosts of the Byrds, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Buffalo Springfield, and interpreting their '60s folk jangle and lazy, sunny harmonies through The Jayhawks' own sweetly awkward formula. The first six tracks are all vintage Louris gems -- trembling and honest, with warm melodies and hooks for days. Frontman Gary Louris says of the album 'It has a rainy day, English countryside kind of feel to it. I think we have been described as a very American band with a very British songwriting style. Maybe that has something to do with it.'This remastered edition includes bonus tracks, new liner notes and expanded booklets.

Sound Of Lies
Sound Of Lies
Following Mark Olson's amicable departure, the remaining Jayhawks reconvened under the direction of Gary Louris to record Sound of Lies, the band's most ambitious album to date. Like Wilco's Being There, Sound of Lies uses country-rock as a foundation and wanders off into a variety of different sonic territories, including surf rock and Beatlesque pop, bringing the music closer to the sound of adult alternative pop/rock. Although the surface of the album is pleasant and melodic, Louris has written a uniformly harrowing set of songs, inspired both by the dissolution of his partnership with Olson and a recent divorce. The lyrics have a naked, emotional honesty which would have been more affecting if the music echoed its sentiment, yet the record still has a subtle grace and power, proving that the Jayhawks remain a distinctive band without Olson. This remastered edition includes bonus tracks, new liner notes and expanded booklets.

Music From the North Country: Jayhawks Anthology
Music From the North Country: Jayhawks Anthology
2009 anthology from the American Alt-Country Roots rockers. Formed in 1985 by Minneapolis roots music fans Mark Olson and Gary Louris, The Jayhawks became one of the most recognized and successful bands of the so-called Alt-Country movement of the 1990's. Their milestone albums Blue Earth, Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass yielded hits like 'Waiting For The Sun' and 'Blue' which showcased the blend of harmony vocals, acoustic guitar and pedal-steel-like leads that quickly became the band's signature sound. After the departure of Olson in 1995, Louris changed direction slightly toward a more Pop-oriented sound and soldiered on with classic albums Sound Of Lies, Smile and Rainy Day Music. Music From The North Country is a 2009 compilation that tells the band's story so far. Collecting key tracks from all of their releases and overseen by Gary Louris, this is a wonderful introduction to, and happy reminder of one of the great American bands of our time.

Mockingbird Time [CD/DVD Combo] [Deluxe Edition]
Mockingbird Time [CD/DVD Combo] [Deluxe Edition]
Deluxe edition includes bonus DVD. 2011 release from the Alt-Country/Rock outfit, their eighth album overall, and the first with the original lineup since 1995's Tomorrow The Green Grass. During their heyday in the first half of the 1990s, The Jayhawks perfected a captivating sound that seamlessly blended the elegant Folk-Rock of The Byrds, the adventurousness of Buffalo Springfield, the Hippiebilly soulfulness of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and the soaring harmonies of The Beach Boys. So it's richly ironic that their reappearance coincides with a dramatic resurgence of the musical approach they played such a central role in perpetuating--but this time around, The Jayhawks themselves are revered as icons by the young bands carrying on those same traditions, and it's their own legacy that they're advancing. On Mockingbird Time, they're once again pushing the envelope in songs and performances of rarefied dynamism and grace.
