Early life and career

Born in The Bronx, Lockhart is the son of Raymond Lockhart, a longtime NBC producer associated with the Huntley-Brinkley Report and special-events coverage. He was born in the Bronx, and grew up in Suffern, New York. In 1978 he moved to Washington D.C. to attend Georgetown University where he received a BA in History. In 1980, he worked on Jimmy Carter's presidential reelection campaign.

He was press secretary for the 1984 presidential campaign of Walter Mondale, then worked for Paul Simon in the Senate. Stints with ABC and CNN followed, then the Michael Dukakis campaign. He moved to Robinson, Lake, Lerer & Montgomery with Mike McCurry, then back to ABC when they hired his (former) wife and colleague from the Mondale campaign Laura Logan. Another gig with NBC covering the Romanian Revolution of 1989 preceded his first on-air job with Sky News reporting on the Gulf War and then business. Private practice with Robinson, Lake followed, where he handled publicity for the Al Nahayan family during parts of the BCCI scandal.

Clinton presidential campaign and the White House

At a time when Lockhart was considering working for AOL, Mike McCurry recruited Lockhart back into politics, and he joined the 1996 Clinton re-election campaign. He served as the campaign spokesman and, following President Clinton's successful reelection, as Deputy Press Secretary to McCurry. After standing in for him on occasion to brief the press, Lockhart eventually succeeded McCurry and delivered his first briefing as Press Secretary on October 5, 1998.

Lockhart handled the press during the Clinton impeachment trials.

After the White House

Lockhart was brought on to the John Kerry presidential campaign as a senior advisor in September 2004.

On September 8, 2004, CBS News aired a controversial report on presidential candidate George W. Bush's military record. The authenticity of the Killian documents used in that report are under scrutiny. In the course of the next few days, it was discovered that Joseph Lockhart, then senior advisor to presidential candidate John Kerry, had made a phone call to Texas National Guard officer, Bill Burkett on September 4, 2004. Lockhart stated later that an unnamed female CBS producer asked him to contact Burkett. Lockhart has denied that the call with Burkett had anything to do with the National Guard issue.

Lockhart co-founded the consulting firm Glover Park Group, becoming its Managing Director.

On February 15, 2016 Lockhart was introduced as the new executive vice president of communications and top public relations official for the National Football League.

Personal life

In 2013, Lockhart married Giovanna Gray. In 2016, it was announced that President Obama and his family planned to rent Lockhart's Kalorama home after he left office. .

It was later revealed that President and Mrs. Obama purchased the house from the Lockharts in May of 2017, saying that it made sense to own the property since they would still be living in Washington for at least another two years.

Wonderfully Blessed, Highly Favored, Deeply Loved by the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit
This book is all about my life experiences. The first part of my life was very terrible and very negative. Since I became a believer in Jesus Christ, I've been positive and successful in all walks of life. I hope you ponder from these experiences.

Tales of Jack the Ripper
Tales of Jack the Ripper
1888: A killer stalks the streets of London's Whitechapel district, brutally--some would say ritualistically--murdering women. With each slaying, the killer grows bolder, his crimes more extreme. So far, there have been five victims (that we know of): Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly. The story of Jack the Ripper captured lurid headlines and the public's imagination, and the first fictionalization of the Ripper killings, John Francis Brewer's The Curse Upon Mitre Square appeared in October of 1888, mere weeks after the discovery of Jack's first victim. Since then, hundreds of stories have been written about Bloody Jack, his victims, and his legacy. Authors ranging from Marie Belloc Lowndes to Robert Bloch; from Harlan Ellison to Maureen Johnson; from Roger Zelazny to Alan Moore have added their own tales to the Ripper myth. Now, as we arrive at the quasquicentennial of the murders, we bring you a few tales more. From the editor who brought you The Book of Cthulhu comes Tales of Jack the Ripper, featuring new fiction by many of today's darkest dreamers, including Laird Barron, Walter Greatshell, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ed Kurtz, Joseph S. Pulver Sr., Stanley C. Sargent, E. Catherine Tobler, and many more.

The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older
The Gay Man's Guide to Growing Older
Based on media representations alone, you might think that the average age of American gay men is approximately 28. But the fact is, the gay population is aging at the same rate as the general population, with one in five over the age of 60. And while the heterosexual population is awash with representations of seniors, the gay population has virtually nothing in the way of older role models. John Lockhart provides a series of memorable snapshots of aging gay American men in these interviews crossing all regional, financial, and ethnic boundaries. The men reflect on a broad spectrum of issues: sex, spirituality, self-image, finances, health, and retirement living. A straightforward and practical book, The Gay Man's Guidet to Growing Older gives gay men a touchstone for planning their years as vital, productive, passionate seniors. Marketing Plans:National Advertising: The AdvocateAwareness Campaign: Gay Over 50 Clubs, Gay PsychotherapistsA former lobbyist, John Lockhart, 68, is a dedicated runner. Since 1986 he has been a Gay Games Gold Medal-winner in the marathon, half-marathon, and 10K race. A visit to an 82-year-old friend he had not seen in 20 years sparked the idea for The Gay Man's Guidet to Growing Older , Lockhart's first book. Lockhart makes his home in San Diego, CA.

Clark's Fork Valley (Images of America Series)
Clark's Fork Valley (Images of America Series)
Many of the great icons of western American history left their mark on Carbon County while living in or traveling through the natural byway that is Montana’s Clark’s Fork Valley. The Apsáalooke, or Crow, people called the valley home for centuries. The Lewis and Clark expedition recorded and named the valley’s river in 1806. In 1807–1808, John Colter, the discoverer of Yellowstone Park, explored the southern end of the valley. The Rocky Mountain Fur Company and adventurers like Jedediah Smith, Joe Meek, and Thomas Fitzpatrick soon followed. In 1864, Jim Bridger blazed the Bridger Trail through the valley. Chief Joseph and his band of Nez Perce followed the valley north from Yellowstone Park during their 1877 flight toward Canada. Calamity Jane and Caroline Lockhart, a noted author and literary rival of Zane Grey, once called the valley home, and Buffalo Bill Cody and John “Liver-Eating” Johnston visited it frequently.

Cobra Killer: Gay Porn, Murder, and the Manhunt to Bring the Killers to Justice
Cobra Killer: Gay Porn, Murder, and the Manhunt to Bring the Killers to Justice
In Cobra Killer, authors Andrew E. Stoner and Peter A. Conway tell for the first time in full detail the twisted story of a pair of young, aspiring gay adult film producers whose quest for fame at any cost leads to the gruesome murder of the man who stands in their way, gay porn entrepreneur Bryan Kocis.News of the killing of the forty-four-year-old (stabbed twenty-eight times, his throat slashed to near decapitation) in his suburban home sends shock waves through the bucolic Pennsylvania town. Neighbors were horrified to hear about the murder but equally astonished to learn that Kocis ran a small but thriving online porn operation from his home. The murder investigation leads police and prosecutors to the far reaches of the country, from Virginia to New York City, to Las Vegas, and ultimately to a nude beach in San Diego, where investigators facilitate an incredible clandestine suspect surveillance. The manhunt nets Harlow Cuadra and his lover Joseph Kerekes, both former military men, turned male models, turned hustlers, turned porn producers, who finally land at the bottom of a deadly conspiracy.Cobra Killer takes readers into the sometimes alluring, sometimes dangerous and often surprising world of gay porn and the deceit, schemes, and ultimate betrayals lying underneath the fantasy.
