Early life

Adolph Thornton, Jr. was born on July 27, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois.[5] His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 2 years old.[5] He has two sisters and two brothers.[6] In his hit track "Preach", he rapped that, "Mama always in the streets, so guess who raised me?" In his music he describes a time where his parents were smoking crack.[7]

Career

In 2008, he was involved in a car accident that nearly took his life and later that same year, his grandmother died from lung cancer. These series of incidents motivated what was his "wake up" call. He started doing music around that time because it served as an emotional release. In addition, Young Dolph and his fellows all complained about fake rappers telling stories about what they've never done, witnessed or experienced. His partners encouraged him to do more music after hearing his first song, even though he did it simply for fun. His first mixtape, Paper Route Campaign, was a success and confirmed his journey into the entertainment industry.[7]

In early 2017, Young Dolph was apparently the target of gunfire in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, on February 25 several dozen rounds were fired, at least two vehicles and several weapons were involved, with rounds striking nearby residences and vehicles. By the next day, several hip-hop news agencies had begun reporting that Young Dolph was the primary target of the shooting, and that perhaps 100 rounds were fired during the attack. It was speculated that the shooting had stemmed from a rivalry between Dolph and rapper Yo Gotti, though both parties have remained silent. Young Dolph used the publicity to promote his second studio album Bulletproof.[8]

2017 shooting

Young Dolph was shot multiple times outside of a local retail store in Los Angeles on September 26, 2017.[9] He received multiple gunshots wounds which upon being hospitalized were being treated as non-life threatening.[9] A few hours later, Young Dolph was being treated under critical condition.[10] Moments after the shooting, Yo Gotti was named as a person of interest in relation to the shooting.[11]

Empire Distribution (Paper Route Empire)

In 2018, Young Dolph signed a multi-million dollar partnership deal with Empire Distribution that supposedly has the potential to grow to 8 figures over the course of the deal’s lifetime. As far as why he felt the Empire partnership was a good idea, Dolph explained: “The deals I was being offered, I can’t lie, they were good. Not only is this still a multi-million dollar deal, but I can keep my masters and get a bigger percentage,” he said. “This is a big deal because it’s linking the biggest independent artist and label with the biggest distribution company.”

Dolph’s new Empire partnership is in perfect timing with his announcement of the release of his fourth solo album, Role Model, set to drop on September 21st. In regards to his album title, Dolph stated: “The Memphis rapper elaborated on his album title saying, “A role model is someone you can look to for guidance in certain areas. I’m a role model for this independent shit and I want all these young black kids to be inspired to get a hustle where they can own their own shit and create something with their own minds and creativity and become even better at it than their role model.”[12]
