The Patricide of George Benjamin Hill: A Novel
The Patricide of George Benjamin Hill: A Novel
All their lives, the children of George Benjamin Hill have fought to escape the shadow of their father, a Dust-Bowl orphan, self-made millionaire in bedrock American capitalism (fast food and oil), and destroyer of two families on his way to financial success. Now, they are approaching middle age and ruin: A failed ex-minor league ballplayer, divorced and mourning the death of his daughter in Miami; a self-proclaimed CIA veteran, off his meds and deciphering conspiracies in Manhattan; a Las Vegas showgirl turned old maid of The Strip, trying to stay clean; and an Alaskan bush pilot, twice un-indicted for manslaughter and recently thrown off his land by the federal government. While their father takes his place at the center of a national scandal, these estranged siblings find themselves drawn from their four corners of the country, compelled along crowded interstates by resentment and confusion, converging on a 300-acre horse ranch outside Omaha for a final confrontation with the father they never had. Migrating from the suburban anonymity of 1950s San Bernardino, to the frozen end of the world (Alaska circa 1976), and concluding in the background of one of the most horrifying moments in American history, The Patricide of George Benjamin Hill spans seventy years of life in America, from the Great Depression to the age of corporate greed and terrorism. It is a literary suspense novel about the decline and consequence of patriarchal society. It is also an intricate family saga of aspiration and betrayal.

The Unlikely Farmer: Biography of a Vermont Hill Farmer
The Unlikely Farmer: Biography of a Vermont Hill Farmer
"I loved that tractor like I would have loved a horse and rode it many long days. I traded it and $3,500 for a Case 730, also bought a hay tedder at auction for $982." -George Kempton "We all went to church and then after dinner cut boys hair, and George and mine too, pleasant day at home." -Pat Kempton Read this book for a rare, well-rounded picture of what it was like to establish a dairy farm and grow a large family in the beautiful, remote, economically poor Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, 1962-1985. George's dry humor combined with Pat's matter-of-fact, but deeply felt journal entries will draw you into their eventful lives, and before you know it you'll be thoroughly immersed in the rhythm of the family and the seasons. George Kempton worked as a valued farm laborer in southern Vermont until he and his wife Patty, a nurse, were able to buy their own dairy farm in 1962 in Peacham, Vermont. There, they raised their five children and integrated into a diverse, rural community during the restive years of the 1960s and '70s. Sadly, Patty died in 2012, but she left behind an invaluable record of family life on the farm in the form of a daily journal. George continued to live on the farm until the day after this book went to press in April 2018, when he passed on while reading a detective novel from the library.

The Films of George Roy Hill
The Films of George Roy Hill
As late as 1976, George Roy Hill was the first and only director to have two films on the all-time top ten box office hits: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting (both starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman). A filmmaker with a diverse background in music, drama and television, Hill proved to be a popular storyteller in a variety of genres. His films are tied to important American themes and reflect an ironic, bittersweet vision of life. The book begins with a discussion of the way Hill's films often make their most important statements on the subtextual level. The stories entertain, but the subtext is often disturbing, contradictory, unresolved. Hill felt that all of his major characters "create an environment, a fantasy, an illusion, and then go on to make it happen." It continues by tracing the thematic characteristics that are consistent with Hill's depiction of protagonists who create their own environments and then attempt to inhabit them. Then, individual chapters study in detail the art, craft and style of each of his films, including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Slaughterhouse Five, A Little Romance, The World According to Garp, Little Drummer Girl and Hill's last film Funny Farm.

Outrage on Gallows Hill (The Inspector Littlejohn Mysteries Book 13)
Outrage on Gallows Hill (The Inspector Littlejohn Mysteries Book 13)
In Melchester, Thomas Littlejohn hunts the killer of a strangled poet The war is over and blackouts are a thing of the past, except in the village of Melchester, where the local council has refused to sully its streets with unsightly lamps. The night is pitch black, but hardly quiet. Young lovers are rendezvousing, a police constable is helping himself to a few of his neighbor’s partridges, and a poet is going to visit his beloved, a new verse on his lips. She will never hear it, sadly, for the young man is stopped along his way—stopped forever, by the tight grip of the garrote. The local constabulary wastes no time reaching out to Scotland Yard, which sends its best man: the easygoing detective-inspector Littlejohn. In Melchester he will find unspeakable secrets—and one citizen whose soul is as dark as the village night.
