What Should Conservatives Do in the Age of Obama? Two Words: Fight BackPresident Obama ran on promises of bipartisanship and centrism, but he’s delivered something else: unprecedented government borrowing and spending, unsustainable debt, and audacious attempts to usher in a colossal, overbearing government, the likes of which we’ve never seen.In Right Now, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele blows the whistle on the entire Obama agenda. Setting aside appeals for caution in taking on a popular president, Steele throws down the gauntlet, insisting Republicans must expose and refute the policies lying at the heart of this administration’s attempts to resurrect a discredited brand of extreme liberalism.A call to arms for grassroots America, this book argues for abandoning conservatism-lite,” returning to core conservative principles, and launching an uncompromising campaign for limited government. The path to a Republican renaissance has already been laid, says Steele: the target is the Obama agenda, the method is active opposition, and the time is Right Now.Bonus: Foreword by Newt Gingrich

Remarkable six centuries and 17 generations of recorded Steele Family Lineage supplemented with family DNA and heraldry beginning in the 8th century. Their journey began in Scandinavia as Norse Men or Vikings then moved to France where they became Normans and invaded England with William the Conqueror. The family resided in County Essex, England for 5 generations before becoming Puritan settlers of the Massachusetts Bay and Connecticut colonies and founders of Hartford, Connecticut. Five generations lived in New England before Aaron Steele traveled the Great Wagon Road south through Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley into the Carolinas and Georgia. During their trek, the Steeles and related families of Polks, Andersons, Mavericks, Martins, Crocketts, Skaggses, Smiths, Wheelers, Irelands, Delks, Huntons, Thompsons and Waplers created a tapestry of faith, military and civic service, explored the wilderness frontiers of Connecticut and Appalachian Mountains, panned for gold in Georgia, Colorado and Montana, fought for American independence and the independence of Texas, and pioneered in Kansas and Wyoming. Whether farmers, merchants, soldiers, government leaders, miners, frontiersmen, landed gentry, nobility or land barons, the Steeles and their extended family prospered always seeking freedom and opportunity. This is their story.
Written with clarity and wit by two top scientists, North American Tree Squirrels illuminates the everyday lives of gray and fox squirrels, the two most dominant types of tree squirrels of the eastern United States.Drawing on more than twenty years of research, Michael A. Steele and John L. Koprowski detail the behavior, reproduction, diet, physiology, and habitat use of these engaging rodents, as well as their complex interdependent relationships with seed-producing trees. The authors compare and contrast tree squirrels with other members of their family, including ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, and prairie dogs. In addition to scientific revelations, the authors describe their fieldwork, from the pitfalls of patrolling forests at night in order to check nest boxes to the challenges of fitting squirrels with radio-tracking collars.

Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 6-8
Are you ready to take your teaching to the next level? Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 6 8 offers a coherent set of professional learning experiences designed to foster teachers understanding of the effective mathematics teaching practices and their ability to apply those practices in their own classrooms. The book examines in depth what each teaching practice would look like in a middle school classroom, with narrative cases, classroom videos, and real student work, presenting a rich array of experiences that bring the practices to life. Chapters are sequenced to scaffold teachers exploration of the effective mathematics teaching practices and furnish activities and materials for hands-on learning experiences around each individual teaching practice and across the set of the eight effective practices as a whole. Specific examples of each practice are presented in context, providing real-life instantiations of what the practice looks and sounds like in the classroom, with a careful analysis that links the practice to student learning and equity. The reader is invited to personally engage in two types of activities that run throughout the book: Analyzing Teaching and Learning, in which tasks or situations are presented to the reader to consider, work out, and reflect on, and Taking Action in Your Classroom, in which concrete suggestions are provided for exploring specific teaching practices in the classroom. Tools, such as a lesson plan template, a task analysis guide, and practices for orchestrating productive discussions are offered to assist teachers in applying the ideas discussed in the book to their own practices. For teachers who aspire to ambitious teaching that will provide each and every one of their students with more opportunities to experience mathematics as meaningful, challenging, and worthwhile, Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 6 8 is certain to be your number one go-to resource.
Stochastic Calculus and Financial Applications (Stochastic Modelling and Applied Probability)
Stochastic calculus has important applications to mathematical finance. This book will appeal to practitioners and students who want an elementary introduction to these areas. From the reviews: "As the preface says, ‘This is a text with an attitude, and it is designed to reflect, wherever possible and appropriate, a prejudice for the concrete over the abstract’. This is also reflected in the style of writing which is unusually lively for a mathematics book." --ZENTRALBLATT MATH
A Quiet Revolution: One District’s Story of Radical Curricular Change in High School Mathematics
Over the past thirty years, Holt High School in central Michigan has engaged in a quiet revolution that has transformed mathematics teaching and learning in the district. From its roots as a rural high school housed in a single building in the 1980s, the high school mathematics staff has grown an innovative, meaningful high school mathematics curriculum that sees nearly every student in the district completing the equivalent of Precalculus. Tracking was dropped in favor of an evolving suite of supports designed to promote student success in unifying, rather than segregating, ways. Mathematics classrooms in Holt are discourse-rich environments where teachers and students explore meaningful uses for mathematics as they reason and problem solve together. This transformation took place and persists amidst changing professional partnerships, shifting district demographics, increasing accountability measures at the state and national level, and turnover in teaching staff and district leadership. In this book, we explore the case of Holt High School though an exploration of how the mathematics curriculum has shifted over the past thirty years, and the conditions and supports that have been put in place in the district to make this work fruitful and sustainable. The story includes successes, failures, celebrations and challenges as we chronicle Holt’s high school mathematics evolution. Guiding questions, protocols, and reflective activities are provided for teachers and district leaders to begin the challenging conversations in their own district that lead to meaningful change.
