On Moonlight Bay (DVD) [1951]
On Moonlight Bay (DVD) [1951]
SYNOPSIS: Not since Judy met the boy next door in St. Louis has there been a heaping of tuneful, romantic Midwestern America like this! Doris Day and Gordon MacRae team for spoonin', croonin' and swoonin' 'On Moonlight Bay', based on Booth Tarkington's beloved 'Penrod' stories. "Try not to walk like the first baseman" Mama (Rosemary DeCamp) tells tomboy Marjorie (Day) as she prepares to date college man Bill (MacRae). The advice takes. The lovebirds hear wedding bells ahead, just as soon as Bill gets his sheepskin. But events may rain on their nuptial parade. World War I rages 'over there'. And Papa (Leon Ames, the father in 'Meet Me in St. Louis') rages at home after a flap with his prospective son-in-law. Will harmony return to this Hoosier home? Surely Day and MacRae will make lots of musical harmony. And 'On Moonlight Bay' will have you sailing along. Easter Parade [DVD] [1948]
Easter Parade [DVD] [1948]
Few American musicals come close to holding a torch anywhere near the delightful Easter Parade, a film that unites Judy Garland and Fred Astaire for the only time in their careers. Fortunately, both of them are in their usual magnetic form.Easter Parade is the film that Astaire came out of retirement to make, telling the story of his character's split from his long-time dance partner, instead recruiting Garland's chorus girl. Accompanied by astoundingly good music from Irving Berlin, the test is on to see if Astaire's character can make Garland's a star. And while you may be familiar with the ending, the journey there is something really quite special. It's lovely, then, that a film as delightful as this has been given such an impressive high definition release. The restoration work is excellent, and what was always a colourful and bright film looks quite brilliant. There's less that can be done with the mono soundtrack, but it's crystal clear and a delight to listen to. And then the package is rounded out with some intriguing supplements, including a rich commentary track, and an extensive modern documentary that charts the making of the film. There's some excellent archive material that's also been gathered today. Special Features: Commentary By Fred Astaire's Daughter Ava Astaire's Daughter New Making-of Documentary Easter Parade: On The Avenue Outtake Musical Number Mr. MonotonyPLEASE NOTE: This is a Region 2 DVD playable in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Japan only, unless you have an All Region DVD player. A Star Is Born/Meet Me In St Louis [DVD]
A Star Is Born/Meet Me In St Louis [DVD]
A musical remake of the classic 1937 film of the same name, A Star Is Born was designed as Judy Garland's comeback vehicle after she had been cruelly axed by MGM studios for professional unreliability. Her erratic moods caused serious production delays this time around too, but the behind-the-scenes turmoil was certainly worth it--Garland gives just about the greatest one-woman show in movie history. The story is the stuff of pure Hollywood legend. Aspiring actress-singer Esther Blodgett meets fading matinee idol Norman Maine (James Mason), who navigates her to stardom under the more melodious handle of Vickie Lester. As she rises meteorically, he declines into alcoholic self-pity--and the result, if you haven't guessed, is plenty of heartbreak. Mason lends subtle support in a role Cary Grant refused as too downbeat for his image, but Judy grabs centre stage with an all-out emotional performance that rivets the attention. Director George Cukor was famous for coaxing the very best out of screen divas, and A Star is Born must be counted as his crowning achievement in this regard. The lush visual style that he contributes provides a suitable setting for Garland's deep, rich voice--throbbing with melancholy in the Harold Arlen-Ira Gershwin ballad "The Man That Got Away", then capering joyfully in the gargantuan musical number "Born in a Trunk". Moss Hart's script takes many cynical swipes at the pretensions of Tinsel Town--perhaps too many for the taste of studio boss Jack Warner, who ordered drastic cuts in the film after its premiere. It has now been restored to (almost) full-length, and you can forget all about Barbara Streisand's flabby 1976 version. This is the one to feast your eyes and ears on. --Peter Matthews
